Separated Stomach Muscles

Separated Stomach Muscles

Hi, we just heard from someone who has separated stomach muscles from a recent pregnancy. She’s never done yoga before. She’s been told that the only thing to help her recover is surgery – something she wants to avoid.

I’ve told her I’d research a little bit before giving an answer as I would not want her to come practice and antagonize her situation.

Any ideas would be appreciated! (I’ve read and understand about post-stomach muscle surgery, but this is pre-)

Hi Paul!

I knew someone to whom this happened during pregnancy. She could not have it fixed until after she was done bearing her children because each successive pregnancy would retear the muscles…ouch!

It was my understanding from her that nothing really improved the condition to the point where the surgery was rendered unnecessary; normal muscluar structure was too badly compromised. She was athletic, but not a yogi. But she did do pilates and physical therapy…again, some improvement, but not enough.

She opted for surgery after her second child because having the muscles in her abdomen not working properly caused back issues for her.

Hope that helps;-)

I think it happens with a lot of pregnancies. Most times (normal), the muscles go back together in time as long as you give it time and are not over aggressive. Sometimes if the separation is too bad, surgery may be required.

Everyone is different. We need to defer to the doctor here.
